SUSTANTIVOS CON TERMINACIÓN –ING

Cuando se menciona una actividad o proceso en forma general, el sustantivo en inglés se deriva del participio presente de un verbo. Estos verbos siempre terminan en -ing. A estos sustantivos se los conoce muchas veces como gerundios.

· …it is mandatory to identify their operating characteristics and limitations before extending their measures to patients.

Mientras que en español el infinitivo es el que funciona como sustantivo verbal (Partir es morir un poco), la forma más común en inglés es la terminación –ing, especialmente como sujeto. En muchos casos, la traducción al español es a través de una palabra distinta al infinitivo:

· Managing elective surgery cancellations and preventing significant increase in nonmedical transfers is one of our objectives for next year

Igual que en español, el verbo aparece en singular a menos que el sujeto consista de dos o más sustantivos:

· Swimming and cycling are both good forms of exercise (Nadar y andar en bicicleta son dos buenas formas de hacer ejercicio)

Overview of Asthma

Asthma is a disease of the lungs that is characterized by tightening of the air pathways. Common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, chest pain, tightness or pressure. Many of these conditions are reversible with medication but not 100% reversible in all patients. Some common features of asthma are -inflammation, airway obstruction and airway sensitivity. Some risk factors for asthma are a family history of asthma, regular lung infections, presence of allergies, exposure to tobacco smoke, low birth weight, and being male.
